Richard Hall (September 7, 1805 – 1857) was born in London on September 7, 1805, and baptized on October 19, 1805, at Marylebone. He was the son and heir of Richard Hall of Portland Place, London, and Totteridge, Hertfordshire, and he was the brother of John Edward Hall.
For his early education, Hall attended Harrow School and then the East India College under Dr. Batten in Hertfordshire. Although he was appointed to the Bengal Civil Service in 1824, he never went to India. Instead, he pursued an academic path at the University of Cambridge, entering Trinity College as a pensioner at age 18 on May 7, 1824. He matriculated in October 1824, earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1828, and later received his Master of Arts in 1831. During his university years, he became a member of the Cambridge Apostles.
Transitioning into the legal profession, Hall was admitted to Lincoln's Inn on May 10, 1827, and was called to the Bar on November 20, 1828. He practiced as a special pleader and worked on the Northern Circuit. Alongside his legal career, he entered public service as a Poor Law Commissioner, where he oversaw administrative districts and reported on the relief of the destitute and the education of pauper children. He also served as the Recorder of Doncaster in Yorkshire from 1845 until his death. Richard Hall passed away in 1857. Historical records and institutional biographies from his era do not document any specific links concerning LGBTQ matters.
